Society members met at Montague Farm for our annual Farm Walk and Prize Giving. Montague is a 700 acre all grass organic farm, run by Martin, Gundrada and their daughter Romney.

Here’s what Martin had to say: It sits on the Pevensey Levels, one of Britain’s most biodiverse wetlands.  Species rich grassland is interspersed with ditches, fens and reedbeds and sheets of water forming winter floods. The suckler herd is now two thirds composed of pedigree Sussex cows, a recruitment begun 4 years ago, our own home bred heifers entering the herd for the first time this year. It is our hope that these lovely animals yield a premium, at low cost from grass only, and enjoy the unusual landscape in which they must survive. Early signs suggest an excellent fit, the Sussex animals happily prospering where previously our cross bred cattle refused to go! The herd is much enjoyed by us all, not just from its farm and flavour attributes but for the character, behaviour and calmness they bring to the heart of the business. 

Alongside the prize giving and farm walk the society hosted a small auction of Sussex memorabilia kindly auctioned by Alex Moss from South East Marts. This raised over £2000 to go back into the society, thank you to all those who bid and bought on the day!
